Keeping your boat cover clean is the key to making your canvas last. Maintenance is the most time and cost-effective when it comes to keeping your boat clean. For some, it can be easier said than done. Coming up with a routine or a set of a few simple rules can be life-changing. Whether or not we keep up on maintaining operations, we can all agree that a nice deep clean will eventually be due. So where do we start? Chemicals are often times too harsh for materials that are made to sit in the sun and lead to premature weathering. Read more to learn about the steps and solutions we use when it comes to cleaning canvas.
Not sure where to place your cover when washing and drying? Use two free-standing ladders and drape the canvas over them. If you have a long metal rod, you can slide it through the two ladders at an even height. Hang the cover over the metal rod.
When waterproofing your cover, make sure you get enough of the product on the material to cover it, but be careful to not soak it to the point of dripping.
If you are a seasoned boat owner, you may already have your routine down pat along with a few tricks up your sleeve.
Here are a few of the key cleaning products that we carry as well as use in our shop and on our boats at Canvas Solutions.
303 Fabric Guard is recommended for Sunbrella canvas every 3-5 years. You can tell when the waterproof solution wears off when you drip water on the fabric. The water should roll off if Fabric Guard is doing its job. When the water starts to soak into the fabric, your cover needs to be waterproofed.
Aerospace Protectant is great for cleaning up your window panels when water and a microfiber cloth are not cutting it. Harsh chemicals are not recommended for cleaning vinyl and result in yellowing, cracking, and distortion. Keep aware of suntan lotion, bug spray, and other potions that may stick to your windows as well.
A great cleaner for hard surfaces, 303 Multi-Surface Cleaner is versatile for your boat, car, etc.
For hard to remove stains, 303 Mold and Mildew Cleaner + Blocker will do the trick.
