Canvas Solutions’ Frequently Asked Questions

Grand Haven, MI

How often does my Sunbrella canvas need to be waterproofed?

To ensure the durability and effectiveness of your Sunbrella covers, we recommend applying a waterproofing treatment every 2-3 years. While Sunbrella fabric is initially waterproofed, it may need to be treated again if it has been washed with detergent, as the washing process can reduce its water-resistant properties. Regular reapplication of a waterproofing treatment will help maintain the fabric's ability to repel water and protect your boat from the elements. By keeping your Sunbrella covers in top condition, you can extend their lifespan and enjoy reliable protection for many seasons.

How long should my cover last?

The key to a long lasting cover is to keep it clean and well ventilated. With high end materials such as Sunbrella, Stamoid and Aqualon, your cover should last between 7-10 years. If good care is kept, the cover can stay with you for up to 20 years. Around 20-25 years, however, the fibers tend to break down and the material will not keep out as much water as it once did.

What products are recommended to clean or maintain cushions and canvas?

303 Fabric Guard is a great product to use for waterproofing and cleaning canvas. Some cleaning products for vinyl cushions we recommend are 303 Multi Surface Cleaner and Sea Foam (only for harsh stains, we don’t recommend over use of Sea Foam for cushions that sit in the sun).

Iossi Mold & Mildew Stain Remover is a color and fabric safe concentrated powder that removes mold, mildew, and most other organic matter stains.

How can I prevent mold and mildew on boat canvas and enclosures?

To ensure the longevity and performance of your boat canvas, it's essential to keep it clean from organic matter such as leaves, bird droppings, and dirt. These substances can degrade the material over time. Avoid prolonged exposure to water by ensuring the canvas dries thoroughly after each use; storing it while wet can lead to mold and mildew growth. Always allow for adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup. Proper care and maintenance will help preserve the canvas, keeping it in excellent condition for years to come.
