How to sew your own boat TOte - Canvas Solutions

If you're an avid boater, you know how essential it is to keep your gear organized and easily accessible. One of the best ways to stay organized is by using a boat bag. Instead of buying a pre-made bag, why not make your own? Not only will you save money, but you can customize it to fit your specific needs.

Sewing your own boat bag is not only a fun project, but it's also a practical one. With a little bit of time and effort, you can create a custom bag that will make your boating experience more organized and enjoyable. Happy sewing!

Here's how to sew your own boat bag for easy storage and organization:

First, choose your fabric. You'll want to choose a sturdy, waterproof fabric that can withstand the harsh marine environment. Canvas or nylon are popular choices. Next, determine the size of your bag. Consider the items you plan to store in it and choose a size that accommodates those items. Cut two pieces of fabric to the desired size of your bag.

Step 1: Gather Materials

Gather the materials you'll need for this project. You'll need canvas fabric, fabric for the lining, a zipper, fabric scissors, pins, a sewing machine, coordinating thread, and a ruler or measuring tape.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

Cut two rectangles of canvas fabric and two rectangles of lining fabric to the desired size of your tote bag. Cut two small squares of canvas for zipper tabs, and if adding pockets, cut additional squares to size and add seam allowance.

Note: If you are not adding a zipper, skip steps 3-5 and continue to step six

Step 3: Attach the Zipper

Place one canvas rectangle and one lining rectangle right sides together. Align the top edge and place the zipper face down along the top edge. Pin the zipper in place, then sew along the top edge using a zipper foot on your sewing machine. Repeat for the other set of rectangles.

Step 4: Topstitch

Flip the fabric so the right side is facing up and the zipper is exposed. Press the fabric, then topstitch along the edge of the fabric close to the zipper using coordinating thread.

Step 5: Attach Zipper Tabs

Fold each small square of canvas in half and place them at each end of the zipper. The folded edge should align with the edge of the fabric. Sew the zipper tabs in place to secure the ends of the zipper.

Step 6: Sew the Bag

Unzip the zipper halfway. Place the canvas pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together. Pin around the edges, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the lining for turning. Sew the edges using a ½ inch seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and end, and being careful as you sew over the zipper.

(for option without zipper): Next, sew the sides and bottom of the bag together, leaving the top open. Fold the top edges of the bag over and sew them down to create a hem. Then, cut two long strips of fabric to use as handles. Sew the handles onto the sides of the bag, making sure they are securely attached.

Step 7: Box the Corners

To create depth at the bottom of the bag, pinch each bottom corner to form a triangle. Measure and mark 1 inch from the tip of the triangle. Sew across the marked line and trim off the excess fabric.

Step 8: Finish the Bag

Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining. Sew the opening closed by hand or machine. Press the bag to smooth out any wrinkles, and you're done!

Enjoy your new canvas tote bag!
